Introduction

Over the past years, foam injection molding has become a popular manufacturing technology towards the production of lightweight, more sustainable, and more dimensionally stable parts in various industries such as automotive, consumer, packaging, etc. This talk will first briefly introduce polymer foaming with the aid of physical blowing agent. Then, various methods of foam injection molding including low-pressure, high-pressure, gas counter pressure and mold penning will be discussed. Some of the advantages that foam injection molding process offers over the conventional solid molding will also be covered.

Professor Dr. Amir Ameli

Professor Dr. Amir Ameli is a faculty member in the Plastics Engineering Department at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. He previously taught at the Washington State University and has extensive experience with polymer foams and composites. His research focus is foaming, 3D printing, and injection molding, particularly for multifunctional polymeric systems. He has published 62 journal articles, 115 conference papers, and several patents and book chapters. His recent patent on plant-based foams has been licensed to commercialize for high-value packaging applications.
